Core modules

The aim of this session is to encourage students to think about what is the law, how it works and to understand the structure of a legal system. Students will be challenged to identify the difference between a legal statute, a government policy and a judicial decision.

The session will introduce students to the foundations of legal argument and persuasive reasoning. Students will explore how lawyers structure arguments, use evidence, and apply precedent to support legal positions. The session will also introduce the PEEL method for paragraph structure and encourage students to develop clear and persuasive legal writing and speaking skills.

The aim of this session is to introduce students to the relationship between law, government and democracy. Students will examine how laws are created, who holds legal authority within a state, and why constitutional principles matter in democratic societies.

Students will explore different legal systems and the role of administrative law within government structures. Students will compare civil law and common law traditions, explore the differences between federal and unitary states, and consider how governments are held accountable when public bodies fail to act lawfully.

The aim of this session is to introduce students to the key principles of criminal law and the role of evidence within the justice system. Students will explore concepts such as actus reus, mens rea, causation and legal defences while examining what constitutes criminal responsibility under English law.

The session will introduce students to the principles of private law and the concept of property rights. Students will explore the distinction between public and private law and examine the different areas of law that govern relationships between individuals and organisations.

Students will explore the development of international human rights protections, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the UK Human Rights Act 1998. The session will also examine the role of international organisations such as the United Nations and encourage students to discuss the challenges of protecting human rights within an increasingly interconnected world.

The aim of this session is to encourage students to think critically about the nature of law, justice and legal philosophy. Students will explore key ideas within jurisprudence, including natural law theory and legal positivism, while considering how legal systems resolve conflicts between competing rights and principles.
