Engineering and Science

As part of our 2-week pre-university programme, Innovate students can choose to study with the Faculty of Engineering and Science. This programme combines rigorous theoretical learning with dynamic, hands-on experiences across fields like mechanics, sustainability, and innovation.

Combining theory with hands-on experience, our curriculum for the Faculty of Engineering and Science, covers key areas such as mechanics, materials science, robotics, and environmental engineering. Through interactive lectures, practical labs, and collaborative projects, students develop critical problem-solving skills and engage with real-world engineering challenges. Our programme also includes guest lectures and site visits to engineering firms, offering students a deeper understanding of the practical applications of their studies and preparing them for future careers in engineering and technology.

It is not only about providing University-level introductory lectures, but also about project based activities that encourage critical thinking and creativity. My daughter recently returned from the Innovate Summer Academy and had an incredible experience, and I can't recommend it highly enough. The quality of teaching was first-class. The lectures went into real depth, and small class sizes meant she got genuine one-to-one time with them to discuss her learning in more detail. This all came together in her Capstone project, where she applied what she'd learned in class and her industry visits, developed skills in critical thinking and problem-solving and presented confidently to a panel of experienced lecturers. She has since told me this experience has confirmed exactly what she wants to study at university next year and I’m delighted as before, she was a bit unsure. Beyond the academics, the programme struck a brilliant balance. The timetable left space to explore London, bond with her group (she has so many amazing pictures and stories!), take in the city's cultural highlights, and go on industry visits that brought her classroom learning to life. She's made genuine friends who are planning to stay in touch and meet up next year and she’s left feeling motivated and ready for the next step in her academic journey. Huge thanks to the whole Innovate team and a special shout out to Kevin, the programme lead, for creating a summer programme that balances academic rigour with a fantastic life experience, and Josh, who looked after the students so well day to day. Highly recommended without hesitation and thank you so much - my daughter will never forget her time with you all!

The classes in my faculty (engineering) were very interesting because they showed us how engineers think and approach problems. The talks held each day were inspiring, as they were given by speakers who had genuinely overcome significant challenges and achieved success.

Our Engineering and Science course equips students with foundational knowledge across mechanical, civil, electrical, and environmental engineering while developing hands-on problem-solving and design skills through experiential learning. Emphasising innovation, teamwork, and the ethical implications of engineering decisions, the course prepares students to tackle global challenges and inspires them to pursue future academic and professional pathways in science and engineering.

Fundamental Engineering Principles

Build a solid foundation in core engineering concepts and explore the different schools of mechanical, chemical, civil and electrical  .

Course modules

Engineering Design and Problem Solving

This module introduces students to the engineering design process, focusing on problem identification, brainstorming, prototyping, and testing. Students explore how engineers apply creativity and analytical thinking to solve real-world problems. Students will also examine how constraints like cost, materials, and environmental factors shape design choices.

Mechanics and Materials Science

Students learn how materials respond to forces such as tension, compression, and shear, focusing on concepts like stress, strain, and elasticity. Through case studies, they explore how material selection impacts the design and functionality of bridges, vehicles, and everyday products.

Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics

This module introduces students to energy transfer principles and the behaviour of fluids in motion. Topics include heat exchange, fluid dynamics, and pressure systems. Students examine how these principles are applied in industries like energy production, aviation, and
environmental engineering.

Structural and Civil Engineering Systems

This module examines how engineers design infrastructure like buildings, bridges, and dams. Students learn about structural integrity, load distribution, and earthquake resistance. Case studies on famous infrastructure failures and successes highlight the importance of robust engineering practices.

Ethics and Sustainability in Engineering

Students explore the ethical considerations engineers face, such as balancing cost with safety and environmental sustainability. Case studies include controversial projects like hydroelectric dams and urban development. This module emphasises the responsibility engineers have to society and the environment.

Environmental Engineering and Sustainable Systems

Environmental engineering focuses on solving global challenges like pollution, water scarcity, and climate change. Students examine strategies such as renewable energy development, waste management, and conservation efforts. Real-world case studies illustrate how engineering projects improve community resilience and environmental sustainability.

Robotics and Automation

Students explore how robots are designed and programmed to perform tasks across industries, from manufacturing to healthcare. The module covers sensors, actuators, and basic coding for robotics. Real-world applications like self-driving cars and industrial robots are discussed. Students gain hands-on experience in building and programming simple robotic systems.

The Capstone Project is the defining moment of every student’s journey at Innovate Summer Academy. It transforms classroom learning into a real-world challenge, giving students the opportunity to think creatively, act boldly, and showcase their talents.

BG Innovation Hub

BG Innovation Hub offers collaborative workspaces, maker facilities and Biolab resources for London creatives. Students meet founders, tour facilities, explore bioengineering startups, prototype bio-based products and join presentations, brainstorming and Q&A sessions.

Mixed Reality Room – Immersive Marketing 

Mixed Reality Rooms is a B2B immersive marketing platform creating gamified, metaverse-driven experiences that engage and educate buyers. Their CEO and CTO will showcase live demos and connect with students on stage.

Alongside industry visits, our programme combines academic excellence with real-world application through project-based learning, museum and university visits, and guest speakers, connecting theory to practice.
