Как выбрать летнюю школу перед поступлением: 10 вещей, которые нужно учитывать

Choosing a summer programme is about more than finding an appealing location. Families should look closely at the teaching, academic content and student support. The best choice is the one that fits the student’s interests and goals.

1. Start with the academic purpose

Ask what the programme is designed to achieve. Is it an introduction to a subject or a structured pre-university experience? A student hoping to explore medicine will need a different experience from one looking for general summer activities. Look for a clear explanation of the learning objectives.

2. Examine what students study

A faculty title is only the beginning. Request sample topics, a timetable and examples of assignments or projects. Find out how much time is devoted to teaching, independent research and feedback.

3. Understand who teaches

Check whether sessions are led by university lecturers, postgraduate tutors or visiting speakers. Each can contribute differently. Ask who leads the core academic teaching and whether students can discuss their ideas directly with them.

4. Look at class size

Smaller groups can make it easier to ask questions, participate in seminars and receive feedback. Innovate Summer Academy states a maximum of 12 students per faculty. Families should still ask how group sizes work during shared activities and excursions.

5. Ask what students create

A tangible project gives students something concrete to discuss afterwards. At Innovate, the Capstone Project involves researching a challenge, developing an approach and presenting findings. Ask how projects are supported, assessed and showcased.

6. Check how university preparation works

Look beyond broad claims about admissions benefits. Ask whether there are sessions on academic writing, subject exploration and personal statements, and what feedback students receive. No short course guarantees admission to a university.

7. Review welfare and supervision

For students aged 14–18, safeguarding matters as much as academics. Ask about staff vetting, supervision arrangements, emergency procedures, accommodation, medical support and how parents are contacted if concerns arise.

8. Understand the location

Find out whether a programme is run by a university or hosted in university facilities by a separate provider. Innovate Summer Academy is an independently operated programme hosted at UCL in Bloomsbury; it should not be confused with a UCL-run course.

9. Compare the full cost

Check what is included in tuition, accommodation, meals, excursions and transport. Ask about optional charges, cancellation terms and any differences between residential and non-residential options.

10. Speak to the team and your teenager

Ask the provider specific questions about your child’s goals. A thoughtful conversation often reveals more than a brochure alone.
